The Fateful Years Around October 7, 2023

A VOICE FOR ISRAEL

When Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer travels to Israel for the first time, she has no idea how life-changing this visit will be. Together with her husband Harald, she later founded the organization “Arc to Israel,” initially to report on Israel and bring tour groups to the country. Later, the focus shifted to supporting Israeli families in need. When the horrific news arrived on October 7, 2023, she followed the events in shock through Israeli media. But it didn’t end there - she traveled to the country once again to uncover the truth behind the headlines.

In her book, she tells her moving story and takes the reader on a deeply personal journey. With her vivid eyewitness accounts and powerful portrayals of harrowing individual fates, she paints an authentic picture of Israel’s current situation in the years before and after October 7, 2023. She skillfully places these events within their political and historical context

She explains complex relationships in an easy-to-understand way and also sheds light on them from a biblical perspective. A book that provides answers to many pressing current questions and makes these years tangible and deeply felt.

“In today’s socio-political situation, this book is an absolute must - a compelling call to look closely and to understand, a work that encourages readers to engage with the challenges of our time and discover new perspectives.”

“In her book, Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer makes political complexities understandable without losing sight of the human dimension.”

Chaya Nussbächer

The philologist with an MBA grew up in a multicultural environment. From a young age, she showed a strong interest in people, took on responsibility, and was active in international committees. In her youth, Chaya won literary awards. In recent years, she has revived this talent, reporting on Israel through her website, articles, and events. She aims to make current events understandable in their historical context and through individual stories, serving as a voice for Israel.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL DIMENSION

Her deep connection to Israel is also rooted in her unique family history: her grandmother hid Jewish friends in a secret basement during the Holocaust, saving their lives.

Her father was the renowned Transylvanian historian Gernot Nussbächer, who owned a library of tens of thousands of volumes and wrote books on the history of Transylvania. From him, she inherited an interest in historical backgrounds and an understanding of historical contexts. He left her an intangible legacy and a special blessing that has become increasingly evident over time.

This dual legacy shapes her motivation to understand, document, and share the history of Israel. Her special connection to Israel is also reflected in her official change of first name to “Chaya” - Hebrew for “life.”

“This book is imbued with the author’s passionate love for the country and, above all, for the people of Israel - their fates are portrayed so vividly and honestly that one sometimes feels as if present on the ground. It is so moving, so immediate, so truthful, so unvarnished - and so bitter and tragic. It touches the heart.

Again and again, Nussbächer describes how the people of Israel asked her one thing: ‘Tell our story! Tell the truth!’ And that is exactly what Nussbächer does!”

“As the granddaughter of a Buchenwald survivor, I am reminded of the Hebrew phrase ‘Tikkun Olam’ - repair the world. This book truly does that.
Thank you for it!”

!

“In rare openness and honesty, the author depicts moments of inner upheaval as well as of new beginnings and courageous reorientation.”

Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer and her husband regularly travel to Israel and founded the organization ARC to Israel to build connections with Israelis. They invest in a project for Israeli orphans and trauma survivors, cooperating with various organizations on the ground to support families affected by October 7, 2023. “A fascinating book that brings Israel’s recent history to life through moving personal stories—shocking, hopeful, and as gripping as a thriller. Through the compelling eyewitness accounts combined with historical context, it creates an authentic, multifaceted picture that both awakens and moves the reader.”

“I could hardly put this book down. The author brought the events before and after October 7, 2023, very close to me. Especially today, I find it so important that a book like this is written, reminding us of how everything is connected and providing genuine insight.”

“This book reads more thrilling than a novel. A wonderful intertwining of three realms: Nussbächer’s personal story, Israel’s historical facts, and finally the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. Outstanding writing meets a current topic presented in historical context, with unflinching accuracy and eye-opening insights.”

The first component lies in the power of the personal accounts of those affected and eyewitnesses. These stories strike deeply, shake the reader, and open a door to personal empathy with the dimension of horror and cruelty that seemingly descended on the Jewish people out of the blue on October 7, 2023 - but they also portray the reality of the admirable ways in which people cope with it. The second component of this mix is the historical contextualization of this massacre within the history of modern Zionism and the modern State of Israel. As the daughter of a historian, Nussbächer carries forward her father’s legacy with this book. The third component is her sensitivity to the spiritual dimension behind the fates and historical contexts. She provides readers with access to the love and blessing of God underlying all suffering. As someone who has read many books about Israel and written a few herself, it is this mix that gives this work its fascination and radiance. I therefore hope that this book finds many readers interested in not only sharing in the fate of those affected, but also understanding these fates within historical and contemporary context, while simultaneously gaining a sense of the God of Israel, whose often mysterious blessing rests over all destinies and the history of Israel. “Wow, what an important book with highly interesting background information and moving stories, vividly showing the current situation. I had already gained insights from other books, but this combination of historical and contemporary information with authentic firsthand accounts is particularly successful, as it allows one not only to learn the facts but also to put a face to them.” Christiane Kathmann, Editorial, Kathmann Berlin

On October 7, 2023, thousands of Hamas fighters and civilians from the Gaza Strip attacked southern Israel, accompanied by rocket attacks across the entire country. Approximately 1,200 people, mostly Israeli civilians, were murdered, in some cases in sadistic ways. Over 3,000 were raped, mutilated, or injured, and about 250 were abducted to the Gaza Strip. It was the most horrific act of terror against the Israeli people on a single day since the Holocaust.

With this book, Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer embarks on a journey of investigation: she and her husband Harald trace the national trauma inflicted on that day and ever since upon the Jewish people. At the same time, through numerous encounters and interviews, they were moved by the astonishing resilience of this deeply suffering nation. Nussbächer became an authentic bridge of comfort, support, and assistance. This book tells of all of that - and does so in a compelling manner.

This extraordinary intensity arises from a combination of three components.

Three remarkable perspectives on Israel!

“Three books for the price of one” could be the sales slogan for this book - and I mean that in the most positive sense. With Israel’s Trial by Fire, you truly get three books in one. All three “books” - or rather, Israel perspectives - are interwoven, making this book a unique literary gold nugget. Even from a layout perspective, the graphical representations are helpful, so you can see at a glance what each section is about, which is also quickly clear from the content itself. If I had to summarize these three “Israel perspectives” or “books,” I would name them as follows: •Experiences in and with Israel by Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer •The most important social and political developments in and around Israel in recent times •A history of Israel Okay, I know this all sounds very, very static—but the book is completely different: Alive. Moving. Eye-opening. Tragic. Inspiring. ISRAEL, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL It all begins in 2018 with Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer’s first trip to Israel with her husband Harald Bottesch. What they didn’t realize was that this trip would change their lives forever. (And by the way: I completely understand, having visited Israel for the first time in April 2025.) Countless contacts and encounters, friendships, and events in the Holy Land are recounted - and the longer I read the book, the harder it was to put down. Brigitte Nussbächer tells her story so honestly, authentically, passionately, and emotionally - but never embarrassingly or voyeuristically - about joyful encounters and various celebrations (Jewish life feels like one big celebration, made up of many smaller ones), but also about the tragic events of October 7, 2023, the “Black Shabbat.” Honestly, at times my breath caught—despite having read, heard, and seen a lot, including some unpublished footage I probably shouldn’t have seen. But when you can picture the people in front of you - their family members, their hopes and dreams - and then read what the Hamas, as well as some “civilians” from the Gaza Strip, have done to them, words simply fail. It is so moving, so close, so honest, so unvarnished - and so bitter and tragic. It strikes straight to the heart. At the same time, you also learn about the many, many contacts and networks that Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer and her husband Harald have established, creating a support and prayer network: “Arc to Israel”. www.arc-to-israel.org I highly recommend exploring www.arc-to-israel.org thoroughly. Here you will find not only current reports but also a wealth of photos - some of which, unfortunately, are only printed small in the book. A VOICE FOR ISRAEL This subtitle appears on the back cover, and I think it perfectly captures the book’s second “Israel perspective.” Here, Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer addresses the current events shortly before and since October 7, 2023. And she does so not in the way the media - especially public broadcasting - portrays them, but as they truly happened, reflecting reality and, above all, the truth. For this reason alone, I would recommend the book to anyone interested in learning what really happened in Israel and how the people there are doing today. What really happened on October 7, 2023, in the border area near the Gaza Strip? What atrocities did Hamas commit? How should Israel’s and the IDF’s (Israel Defense Forces) response be assessed? How should the accusations of genocide be understood? Why is Israel being taken to the International Court of Justice? How is it possible that just a few weeks after the attack on Israel, the UN itself called on Israel to agree to a ceasefire? What is Germany’s role in all of this? These are questions upon questions, which Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer addresses in this second “Israel perspective.” I find this particularly valuable and important, as public broadcasting coverage is often catastrophic and far from reflecting reality. AN AMAZING STORY This is how I want to name the third “Israel perspective,” because here it is about the grand story of Israel—from biblical times to the present. From the founding of the state in 1948, the subsequent attacks by surrounding countries, to other major events such as the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. What becomes clear here is the astonishing dimension of how such a small country (about the size of the German state of Hesse) has played - and continues to play - such a significant role in world history. For anyone who cannot see God’s sovereignty and greatness behind this, hopefully Israel’s Trial by Fire provides a new opportunity. Of course, this Israel perspective is not a historical treatise or a classical chronology, but the reader gains very important and helpful insights into the major events of Israel’s history. 1+1+1 = MORE THAN THREE What fascinates me about Israel’s Trial by Fire is that Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer does not simply line up these three different Israel perspectives, but weaves them together into a cohesive masterpiece, giving each perspective more power and depth. The book is therefore far more than just the sum of three different viewpoints. It is both a panoramic and a detailed snapshot - both a wide-angle view and a close-up photograph. Combined with Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer’s personal experiences, her family history, and even the story of changing her name (she was not born “Chaya”), it becomes uniquely compelling. I am convinced that this book is both an excellent introduction and a deepening for anyone who wants to engage with Israel in “history and present.” Both aspects come through vividly, naturally infused with the author’s passionate and glowing love for the land and, above all, the people of Israel - their lives are depicted so vividly and honestly that at times you feel as if you are there with them. Repeatedly, Nussbächer describes how the people of Israel asked her: “Tell our story! Tell the truth!” Israel and the Jewish people are suffering more than ever, as fake news grows louder and disguised, while overt antisemitism increasingly spreads in Germany. Nussbächer does exactly what the people of Israel have repeatedly asked her to do: “Tell our story!”

A truly eye-opening experience

This book connects recent history with elements of autobiography. An important book that reveals truths we search for in vain in mainstream media. Ms. Nussbächer recounts harrowing life stories that have taken place in the here and now, stories of people who have had to endure terrible suffering. She does not conceal the atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists against Israelis. This gave me a new, more alert perspective and a different understanding of the attack on October 7, 2023, and the war that continues to this day. It highlights the difference between acts driven by a desire to kill, mutilate, and torture - and those motivated by defending and protecting one’s own family and people. At the same time, current decisions by global politics regarding Israel leave me stunned, especially in light of the background knowledge provided in Ms. Nussbächer’s book, which makes these decisions seem highly questionable. The book offers a great deal of illuminating information in this regard as well. Woven throughout the text are well-balanced and accessible passages on Israel’s history since its founding, helping me better understand broader connections. With this solid knowledge, I feel well-informed and better equipped to engage in discussions with others. A highly relevant and absolutely worthwhile read!

Finally, answers

The topic of Israel naturally comes with many questions and few answers. This book provides them. Whoever reads it will understand. Connections become clear. The author’s personal experiences and heartfelt involvement led me, while reading, into a brilliant and gripping account of historical events and current developments. Highly recommended!

Highly recommended reading

I literally “devoured” this book. The author and her husband know Israel well and are correspondingly well connected. This allows her to convey an Israeli perspective - without claiming to know better or to lecture. It is impressive how she manages to place the events of October 7, 2023, up to the present, into the broader context of Israel’s history. Highly recommended reading.

Highly recommended for purchase

Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer has written a fantastic book!!!! A heartfelt “thank you” for that!!! She has structured it wonderfully, combining personal and historical background, current political context, and especially the intense reports on projects and personal relationships with people who, as a result of the horrors of October 7, have lost loved ones, been uprooted, and traumatized. I was also particularly impressed by her personal journey. You can feel while reading that she is fully committed to Israel, and that this is not mere lip service. I definitely recommend this book to others as well.

A Must-Have

"Israel’s Trial by Fire" is presented to the reader by the author Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer in six stages. In doing so, the author follows three main threads: •Changes in her own life, giving the reader a sense of who she is and the background she comes from. •Getting to know Israel - the awe of the lifestyle there, the atmosphere in the country, and an overview of its recent history. She shows how her initial amazement develops into solidarity as she gets to know the landscape and the people, and friendships inevitably form. •The political events in the country, which are skillfully woven into each part to provide a comprehensive picture. Although the author was initially not interested in ruins and memorial churches, she soon realizes that neither can be overlooked in Israel. History and the past are kept alive; remembering and commemorating are consciously brought into the present. Through the way she structures her book, she makes it clear that in Israel everything is intertwined: yesterday, today, and tomorrow. What particularly struck me in the first part is the realization that today a large portion of Christians do not recognize what God is doing in Israel or understand Israel’s significance for us. I hope this book will lift the veil from the eyes of Christians and help them return to their roots. In the second part, Brigitte Nussbächer shows that Israel is not a topic that can be ignored without consequence - it challenges us, as it has challenged generations before us, to take a stand alongside it. This part is especially moving, as it begins with the day of horror, October 7, 2023. She addresses political and societal events in both Israel and Germany and draws parallels to the Reichspogromnacht (Kristallnacht – Night of Broken Glass) of 1938. When I read this section, content from the Bible, politics, history, and antisemitism came together like puzzle pieces to form a coherent picture. She uses clear language when describing how the Christian community has become completely disconnected from Jesus, the Jew. What impressed me most is that her friendship with Israel is genuine - she travels into a war zone not for content, likes, or reach, but because she truly cares. The danger is real to her, so much so that she even updates her will in preparation. In Part Three, she writes about the courage and strength of the people, emphasizing that this kind of resilience can only come from experiencing God’s presence in Israel every day. She wishes to make this knowledge accessible to people in Germany as well, and I am convinced that her wish is being fulfilled, in part through this book. Part Four covers Israel’s history from 1897 to 2023, which is essential for understanding today’s events in context. We often marvel at the miracles of the Old Testament and how God intervened. Brigitte Nussbächer reminds us of the incredible miracles and victories of Israel in recent years, telling compelling and moving personal and background stories, and showing how ordinary people today are used by God to accomplish great things. She also highlights organizations, as well as individuals, who contribute to providing help and comfort to widows, orphans, mothers, the unborn, and traumatized people, supporting them in continuing life after the atrocities of October 7. A highly topical book that brings together past and present events - a true eye-opener and heart-warmer for an extraordinary people.

A Voice for Israel – a fantastic book!

The author travels to Israel for the first time in 2018. What happens to her is something that likely happens to many who visit the Holy Land for the first time – they fall in love. With the land and its people. “When the heart is full, the mouth overflows” – this is how she describes her feelings, which she makes tangible at home after returning from Israel. At first for her father, then for everyone interested in information about Israel. We learn a great deal about the history of Israel, which is so often completely misrepresented in the media. You can feel her love for the country and for the Jewish people. And more than once I find myself thinking – there should be many more people like her. They are so important! Her journeys that take her to Israel after October 7, 2023, leave me deeply moved and humbled. The suffering that this terrible massacre brought upon the people there is hard to comprehend. She meets with those affected and writes about what she experienced, which makes it very valuable to me. No filter – firsthand information is worth its weight in gold when it comes to Israel, especially considering the way our media reports on it. She writes: “It is my most heartfelt prayer that I succeed in conveying the current reality, the historical background, and also the biblical vision of Israel’s future in an accurate, insightful, and moving way.” Chapeau – she has absolutely succeeded. I read the book in two days; the blend of historical context, political facts, and human stories deeply moved and convinced me. THANK YOU! Am Israel Chai.

Very informative and moving

This book was written with deep knowledge, but also with a great heart for the people of Israel. It is a search for traces, illuminating the history of Israel from its beginnings to the present day. The couple is deeply affected by all the struggles, hatred, and countless losses in families. They meet people and encounter places filled with love as well as profound suffering. Within them grows a deep desire to help this God-chosen people. This brings them to their limits, yet they also witness how God opens doors. Through many hours of hard work, they found an organization, give lectures, and assist with donations. The cruel massacre on October 7 deeply wounded people. Nothing will ever be the same again, and reading about it was deeply moving. But it is precisely because of this that this small nation sticks together, helping people to heal. What continually impresses me is the fact that there is no hatred and no thought of revenge. On the contrary, they live out love in many different ways. Let us bless and pray continually, and for those whom the Lord inspires, also help in practical ways. Thank you for this wonderful book and for all the effort it represents! May God bless you!

Current, moving, gripping - simply invaluable!

Those who have had little or no contact with Israel will gain a concentrated experience here. But even for Israel experts, this book comes highly recommended, because it is very likely that one will recognize oneself in the accounts. That was certainly my experience. Eyewitness reports of the unimaginable atrocities committed by Hamas, accounts from the affected locations, empathetic conversations with those impacted, and repeated historical context and other facts - the reader receives a comprehensive picture of Israel and the Jewish people and can reflect on which side they want to stand on from now on. It is clear that the author’s love for Israel shines through. This is contagious - and rightly so. She does not write about trivial or unimportant things conceived at a “green table.” No, she literally takes the reader to Israel and into the events themselves. The book is very readable, completely current, and highly gripping. At the same time, it is moving and deeply touching. Personal insights into the life of the author and her family make the book very intimate. Conclusion: This book is truly valuable and will positively influence the reader’s attitude toward the Jewish people and Israel.

Clarity Against Chaos

We live in chaotic times, so they say. Nothing seems certain anymore. Governments are increasingly overwhelmed, people are suffering, chaos reigns, and wars and violence have become everyday life… As the granddaughter of a Buchenwald survivor, I never thought that 81 years after the Holocaust, the wave of antisemitism would rise so high again. The inoculation of mercy with the conviction “Never again!” is fading. This means we are once again living in times of chaos. The review of the massacre on October 7, 2023, confirms this more than clearly. When chaos reigns, people become extremely manipulable; everyone has their own version of the truth, and one feels confused and helpless. In times of chaos, we long for order - and for that, we need clear answers to - ressing questions, open and unmanipulated sources of information, and precise historical documents. We must never forget: peace is far more than the absence of war. It must be actively built and fostered on foundations such as justice, the rule of law, education, and so on. In my opinion, the author has contributed a very important building block with this book. In Hebrew, there is a phrase: “Tikkun Olam” - repair the world. This book does exactly that. Thank you for this, Mrs. Nussbächer!

A masterpiece

I always thought I knew a lot. But what the author offers here is a wonderful intertwining of three different worlds. First, the personal story of Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer with the Jewish people; second, the historical facts concerning the people and land of Israel; and finally, the depiction and impact of the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. She weaves all three areas together as naturally as she does compellingly, making this book read more thrilling than a novel. An outstanding writing style meets contemporary issues presented within a historical framework, with uncompromising accuracy and eye-opening insights. The book is not only informative but also a call to reflection for all of us, challenging the way we approach Israel, both personally and as believers. Essential reading for everyone! This masterpiece has enriched me immensely.

A multilayered, vivid picture that draws readers straight into the heart of the events.

I had the opportunity to read this book at the manuscript stage. Impressively, the author thoroughly combines well-researched facts about Israel’s past and present with current events and deeply moving personal experiences. The result is a multilayered, vivid picture that draws readers right into the heart of the events. The author takes us on her own journey with the land and people of Israel. Despite the war and suffering of recent years, she shows how the promises of the Bible become visible and tangible in Israel. In rare openness and honesty, she describes moments of inner upheaval as well as awakening and courageous new direction - a development that ultimately finds expression in her resolute “Hineni” – “Here I am!” In today’s socio-political climate, this book is an absolute must-read, a compelling call to pay attention and seek understanding - a work that inspires courage to engage with the challenges of our time and discover new perspectives.

A moving masterpiece with extraordinary radiance

Brigitte Chaya Nussbächer has created a magnificent book. I was fortunate enough to read the manuscript in advance. This book has an extraordinary impact. Written in a highly gripping way, it explores the deepest human depths. The unimaginable suffering it documents - drawn from her many personal encounters in Israel with those directly affected by October 7, described openly and candidly but never mercilessly - moved me profoundly. The author’s own deeply moving, lived family story is intuitively interwoven with the fateful current events in Israel and the (biblical) history of the Jewish people, creating a brilliantly radiant work of art as a whole. The book concludes with an utterly honest, immersive search for traces of blessing: How does this small nation so often manage, through suffering, to rise again, not despair, and develop immense vitality?

The Incredible Origin Story of the Book
“Israel’s Trial by Fire”

When I received the assignment to write a book about Israel in April 2025, a release date was scheduled for the fall 2026 program. In fact, I could only start writing in mid-May, as I first had to complete the reports on our Israel mission in April 2025. But then one of the most productive phases of my life began. It felt as if the book were writing itself, and I could barely keep up with capturing the content in words. I devoted one to two vacation days each week, plus evenings and weekends. Chapter by chapter, the book took shape, and I juggled three levels: current events, historical context, and personal life stories. At the end of June, I contacted my project manager and suggested an earlier release date, as it was already clear that I would finish by the end of July. The initial response was a rejection: the publication dates for the upcoming releases were all already set, and there was no capacity to add another title. But then another author informed the publisher that she could not deliver her manuscript as planned - and my book was allowed to fill that gap in the spring 2026 program. Without my knowledge, the release date of another, timeless book on Israel was also postponed by the publisher to make room for this highly topical work. The new release date was set for March 2026. While I had originally assumed that the writing itself would be the most intense part of the work, I was soon proven wrong. Up until now, I had been working alone; now the interactions with others begin, and different schedules and competing priorities collide. This becomes evident already during the editing phase, which was originally scheduled to last eight weeks - five of which are already occupied due to the editor’s vacation and my own. I will always be grateful that we actually managed to complete the entire workload in just three short weeks in an incredible sprint. At the same time, work begins on the title and cover. After several iterations, we find a solution that makes everyone happy. For this part, I also involved our friends from Israel, because it was extremely important to me that they could identify with this book, which contains their stories. Then a bold idea arises. We had long planned to hold an Israel event at the end of January for Holocaust Remembrance Day. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the book could be released not in March, but already in January, and we could combine the book launch with the event? However, I receive no response from the publisher to this request. The true trial, however, comes during the typesetting phase, when the fully edited and corrected text is transformed into a professional, print-ready layout. At first, my book remains untouched because other processes must be completed first. When I finally receive it back from the typesetter in the second half of October, over 800 new errors have been introduced into the correctly delivered text. These must be painstakingly corrected over several rounds of grueling work, with the last ones only eliminated in November. During this time, preparations for the Israel event are already underway, and we still do not know whether Israel’s Trial by Fire will be available in time, which makes promotion extremely difficult. We decide to announce the book together with the event, but without a concrete release date. Then, on December 10, I receive a call: the finished book has been delivered. That evening, I rush to the publisher’s office - and there stand the pallets with 3,000 copies. During the first hour, I search only for potential errors, and I am overjoyed to find none. Only then does the full joy finally break through.

“You have to do things to make them happen” and “You are only as big as the dreams you dare to live.” Before me lies a dream that has become reality. Although the book cannot be sold during the current Christmas season, since it was only announced for 2026, we finally know that we will be presenting it at the Israel event - and we can now start privately hinting at it and giving it to our Jewish friends for Hanukkah!

That night, the entire story of the book’s creation unfolds before my inner eyes - the obstacle course filled with countless apparent impossibilities - and it becomes clear to me that I owe this happy ending, despite all adversities, solely to my Heavenly Father. It was not perfect planning or coordination, professionalism, or genius that led to this outcome. He Himself continually cleared the way and removed obstacles - and also made sure that this was evident.

Since the release date remained uncertain until the very end, the publisher’s catalog lists the publication date as the end of February, and the publisher’s marketing measures are also scheduled for later.

The book "Israel's Trial by Fire" is on its way to readers

Nevertheless, my book leaves the warehouse in the first days of January 2026 and begins its journey to readers. It seeks to reach the people of Israel, to give faces to current events, to give space to the voices of October 7; to show how affected families are piecing their lives back together from the rubble, and to tell the story of this extraordinary country, accompanied by miracles.

On January 28 - as hoped and dreamed - the book premiere takes place during the Israel event "For the Living". The response is overwhelmingly impressive. Every second guest takes at least one copy of the book. Some even arrive with a list of people they want to gift the book to, requesting signed dedications. And incredibly, but true: in the first month after its release, Israel’s Trial by Fire becomes the best-selling book across the entire publishing group.

“Today I have the privilege of presenting to you my first book on Israel, which was published at the end of 2025: ‘Israel’s Trial by Fire – The Fateful Years Around October 7, 2023’. It is the story of Israel over the past seven years - but it is also our story, experienced in Israel. On the first page of my book it says: ‘For the sake of Zion, I will not remain silent.’”

I made the decision not to remain silent in October 2023 - after the horrific massacre by Hamas, the outrageous UN resolution of October 27, which did not even mention the atrocities committed by Hamas, and the deafening silence from many quarters - private, secular, and church alike. I wanted, as best I could, to follow the example of my grandmother, who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and was a voice for Israel.

It is a great joy for me that "Israel’s Trial by Fire" was published under the Hänssler label. I assume that, like me, many of you knew Friedrich Hänssler and remember that Israel was a central theme for him over decades - and that for his commitment he received one of Israel’s highest honors: the honorary title “Friend of the City of Jerusalem.” That this book is experiencing its premiere here today, in this house, is a privilege and shows that his legacy continues. In this book, I take you on a journey to the people of Israel, giving faces to current events. The individual stories offer insight on a far deeper level than conventional media can. Join me and marvel at a thriving Israel before the massacre, where many biblical promises have been fulfilled. Then we go into the devastated kibbutzim, see what truly happened on October 7, and witness how the affected families rebuild their lives, what they feel - and how the events in Israel are perceived. Authentic. Moving. Full of hope. It is also a journey into the past, because a deep look into Israel’s history explains much that would otherwise remain hidden. Within the broader context of historical events, causes and connections become clear, and shocking historical parallels to the period before the Holocaust emerge. Exciting as a thriller. Fascinating and stirring. In the end, we turn to the age-old question: What helps us to look beyond current events and not lose hope?

“Why are we linking the book launch with Holocaust Remembrance Day? Isn’t that sacrilegious?
From our perspective, it closes a circle. This book is dedicated to the event that was, in many ways, almost like a Holocaust day, or at the very least, the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust - and that has reopened old wounds wide.”

"Israel’s Trial by Fire" was created at the request of affected families who asked me to tell their story. And it is meant to be a blessing for Israel; it is intended to contribute to healing - not only in its content, but also in a very tangible way.

That is why we are offering "Israel’s Trial by Fire" for sale here at this exclusive book table in the hall.
What makes it special: these copies are author’s editions that I purchased myself, and the proceeds from these books—and only these books! - will go directly as a donation to the affected families.
It is thus a gift table for Israel, where all our contributions come together to bless God’s people.
And personally, I believe that this is exactly what is called for on Holocaust Remembrance Day.”

Hora:

“It is very important to me that Israel’s Trial by Fire stands next to the Bible on every bookshelf. This is not a book you read just once. We must read it again and again so that this topic - what God intends for His people - remains in our hearts and souls. I am so grateful for this brilliant book.” (Kathi Steiert)
